Dr. Ron Shiffler, founder of the online MBA program: The core competencies for the McColl School of Business is really based on the three C’s of leadership. The first is competence, which is the knowledge that you gain from the classroom; the second is character, what kind of person are you, how do you lead other people, what is your listening skills; and the third is commitment to the community. It’s not all about making money in the McColl School of Business; it’s really about how do you give back to the community.
Dr. Charlene Geisler, Associate Professor: We have great faculty who are well known in terms of their expertise on leadership, so I think that will really differentiate our program from the other online MBA programs.
Bob Woods, MBA Graduate: The key things that the program has offered me to become a better leader is that is has broadened my perspective of the business environment. It actually helped me understand the ins and outs of running my own business but also understand the corporate structure of succeeding within a company.
Hugh McColl, Jr., Former CEO, Bank of America: Well I think the most important opportunity that the McColl School should provide is a relevant education that is respected and is rewarding. We decided from the outset, that we would focus on two things that a lot of business schools don’t. One is leadership and the other is community service.
Shiffler: For young professionals trying to advance in their careers, they will need the MBA degree. We at the McColl School can provide the excellent education to propel them forward in their career.
Geisler: The McColl School of Business just has such a wide network with employers. And so being part of the online MBA program our students will be able to leverage the network that we already have built up over the years.
Shiffler: The alumni association in our graduate program is very, very strong and they are very interested in carrying that over to this online experience.
Woods: All alumni are considered ambassadors to the school. So if there is another individual who is trying to progress their career we’re the ones trying to enable them to push their career to the next level.
Shiffler: Each student is given an individual coach and that coach stays with them in every class. They’ll get a 360 degree view of their leadership skills and throughout the program they will have an opportunity to touch base with that coach and build upon their critical thinking skills.
Woods: I got a lot from the leadership styles 360 reviews; they gave me a very good perspective on myself as an individual, as well as a professional.
Shiffler: I believe that online learning is so crucial and becoming more prevalent today because the students are very busy. They have 3 or 4 major responsibilities - they have to work, they have family, they have commitment to community. We’re very committed to online learning at the McColl School.
McColl: It will allow us to offer a broader range of subjects and I think that will all enhance the value of the school experience.
Woods: I’d actually been in two other programs just for short term and the Queens program was the one that stood out from a leader prospective. Queens has given me the ability to be a leader of leaders.
