Dean of the McColl School of Business
Dr. Rick Mathieu
In July 2015, Dr. Rick Mathieu assumed the position of Dean of the McColl School of Business. Prior to his arrival at Queens, Rick served at James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg, Virginia as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Business. He has also served JMU as the Department Chair of the Department of Computer Information Systems and Business Analytics.
Prior to his work at James Madison University, Dr. Mathieu has been Department Chair and faculty member in the Department of Decision Sciences and Management Information Systems at the John Cook School of Business at Saint Louis University, and has served as a faculty member at University of North Carolina at Wilmington’s Cameron School of Business.
Dr. Mathieu has extensive experience in departmental, unit, and university strategic planning. He has been extensively involved in college and program accreditation through the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) and the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET). Rick has also been instrumental in curriculum development and forging community and university collaborative relationships.
Rick’s research is in the areas of information systems and operations management with a particular interest in business analytics, enterprise management, and supply chain management. He is on the editorial board for the International Journal of Services Sciences, the International Journal of Business Process Integration and Management, and the International Journal of Services and Operations Management.
Dr. Mathieu has a Ph.D. and M.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware. He has published a book, three book chapters, over thirty-five journal articles and numerous conference proceedings.
Dr. John Bennett
John L. Bennett is Associate Professor, Executive Leadership Faculty, and Director of the MS in Organization Development and Coaching Certificate programs with the McColl School of Business. Dr. Bennett is the immediate past-president of the Graduate School Alliance for Executive Coaching (GSAEC), chair of the North Carolina IO Psychologists (NCIOP), a Charter Fellow in The Lewin Center and a Founding Fellow of the Institute of Coaching, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School. In addition to teaching, he is a frequent speaker and presenter at academic, professional, and client conferences and workshops.
He has nearly 30 years of progressively challenging and successful experience creating, leading and being a part of change in various industries. Dr. Bennett was CEO of an American Red Cross biomedical services division, where he led pharmaceutical manufacturing and distribution operations and the development and delivery of essential human services. He has also led mergers and turnarounds, new product development, marketing and technology system designs and integrations. He served as CEO of The Foundation of Coaching, a project of the Harnisch Foundation and as Senior Vice President and Talent Solutions Director for Lee Hecht Harrison.
As an executive coach and consultant, Dr. Bennett has helped individuals, teams and organizations in a variety of industries prepare for and excel through change for nearly 15 years. He is author of numerous articles about building organizational resilience to change, coaching, communication, innovative team-based management and leadership as well as the books Leading the Edge of Change, The Essential Network and Coaching for Change. His recent consulting and coaching clients include for-profit and not-for-profit, organizations in government, biomedical, construction, education, defense, financial services, higher education, human services, insurance, manufacturing, pharmaceutical, and professional services.
Dr. Bennett earned a BS degree from Mars Hill College, an MPA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and an MA and Ph.D. in Human and Organizational Systems from Fielding Graduate University. He also earned the Professional Certified Coach (PCC) credential through the International Coach Federation (ICF) and Board Certified Coach (BCC) credential through the Center for Credentialing & Education.
Dr. Harry P. Bowen
Dr. Bowen is Professor and W.R. Holland Chair of International Business and Finance at the McColl School of Business. Prior to joining McColl, he was Professor of Economics and International Business at the Vlerick-Leuven-Gent Management School, Belgium; a visiting Associate Professor at the Paul Merage School of Business at University of California, Irvine, where he also served on the faculty of the Department of Economics; and Associate Professor of Economics and International Business at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University. He has also served as a consultant to various government agencies, corporations and private nonprofit institutions, including the 3M Corporation, American Chamber of Commerce (Belgium), Chrysler Corporation and the U.S. National Science Foundation.
Dr. Bowen is internationally recognized for his research on the determinants of international trade patterns and international competitiveness. His research also explores corporate strategy, entrepreneurship, international trade policy, international migration and applied statistical methods. He is a co-author of Applied International Trade (2012, Palgrave-Macmillan: London). A former Olin Fellow in Empirical Economics and U.S. Fulbright Scholar, Dr. Bowen has lectured at numerous foreign universities.
Dr. Bowen received his BA summa cum laude in Economics from the University of California at San Diego and his doctorate degree in Economics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Dr. Bradley Brooks
Brad Brooks is a Professor of Marketing at the McColl School of Business. Before coming to Queens, he worked in sales and sales management with First Investors Corporation. His research interests focus on studying customer behaviors and using customer markets to develop marketing strategies.
Dr. Brooks stays active in consulting with a variety of organizations including large corporations like Bank of America, but also entrepreneurial startup organizations and nonprofits. As an example, he handled marketing research and planning services for Un-Du, a new type of adhesive remover that was later bought by the Dumars organization and was named the 1996 national new product of the year.
As a consumer specialist, he appears regularly on a Charlotte news program, where he is currently presenting a series of media segments explaining how marketers and consumers approach various product choices.
Dr. Brooks earned a BS in Financial Management from Clemson University and an MBA and a Ph.D. in Consumer Behavior from the University of South Carolina.
Dr. Steven Cox
Dr. Steven Cox is a Professor of Marketing at the McColl School of Business. He began his career as an Assistant Professor of Marketing at Virginia Tech. After two years, he made the leap to industry, where he spent the next 25 years. He has held management positions in marketing and sales with AT&T, General Electric, EOSAT and Orbital Sciences. During the course of his career, he led teams responsible for domestic, U.S. government and international sales. While working with Orbital Sciences and EOSAT, a joint venture between GE and Hughes Aircraft, he developed and managed a worldwide sales and distribution network with offices in Asia, Africa, Europe, Australia and Latin America. More recently, he became chief executive officer of a geographic information-systems company that serves the mapping needs of several corporate and government clients.
Returning to university teaching in 2003, Dr. Cox was awarded the Outstanding Business Professor Award in the spring of 2006 at Meredith College. In the fall of 2006, he joined the faculty at Queens, where he became the chairman of the undergraduate program in 2008. In addition to his teaching duties, he has completed research studies for numerous Charlotte business and nonprofit organizations, including TRREX, Dunbrooks, Goodwill Industries, BYB, BB&T, Avantgarde Translations and the U.S. National Whitewater Center. He has also published his findings in scholarly journals and at academic meetings.
He earned a Bachelor of Science from Northwestern University, an MBA from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate degree from the University of Nebraska.
Dr. Gary Powell
Dr. Gary Powell is a professor of finance in the McColl School. He has published 25 articles in academic and professional journals including Financial Management, the Financial Review, the Journal of Economics and Finance, Quarterly Review of Economics and Finance, Journal of Applied Finance and Review of Financial Economics. His research topics include dividend policy, stock repurchases, corporate cash holdings, stock splits, exchange listing, international finance and corporate social responsibility.
Dr. Powell has a BS in Chemical Engineering from the University of Akron and an MA in Economics and Ph.D. in Finance from Kent State University. He also holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation.
Dr. John Repede
Dr. John Repede is a Professor of Management Science and Computer Information Systems at the McColl School. Prior to his appointment at Queens, he held academic positions at Eastern Kentucky University and at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he introduced major changes in teaching methods and created educational software.
Dr. Repede has contributed research and has made presentations at numerous national conferences. He has authored, co-authored and been a contributing author to 16 textbooks in information systems and operations management. He has published in the leading journals in the operations management field, and has served as a consultant and expert witness in civil and criminal computer-related cases, including expert testimony for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
In addition to his teaching and research, he is an industry consultant and commercial software developer. Dr. Repede has extensive work experience in the private and public sectors, holding positions in municipal emergency services, retailing, health care, information technology and nonprofit foundations.
He received an Associate of Arts degree in Liberal Arts and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Fire Science Technology from Harper College. He also earned a BA in Management from the University of Illinois-Springfield, an MBA in Management Information Systems from the University of Illinois-Urbana and a Doctorate of Business Administration degree in Management Science from the University of Kentucky.
Dr. William Sparks
Dr. William Sparks is the Associate Dean for Graduate Programs & External Relations and the Director of the Office of Leadership Initiatives for the McColl School of Business. Concurrently, he is a Professor of Business & Behavioral Sciences and teaches courses in leadership development and change management. He is a principal with Sparks & Associates, LLC, a professional services firm focused on leadership and team development, corporate creativity and innovation, and change management. He is also a managing partner with Peter C. Browning & Associates, LLC, a consulting firm that provides services to corporate boards of directors. He has consulted with a variety of organizations in the public and private sectors, including the U.S. Navy, SPX, EnPro Industries, GlaxoSmithKline, Anheuser-Busch, Bank of America, Duke Energy, Wachovia/Wells Fargo, the Department of Energy and the Charlotte Hornets.
Dr. Sparks has published numerous research papers and book chapters, and has contributed articles to the Charlotte Observer and Charlotte Business Journal. He is a co-author of the book The Combustion Research Facility: A Model for the 21st Century Open-User Facility, a research-and development management case-history published by the Department of Energy, and the author of the forthcoming book Actualized Leadership, to be published in 2015. He received the Fuqua Distinguished Educator Award for excellence in teaching at Queens in 2003 and 2005. In 2009, he was awarded the inaugural McColl School Leadership in Teaching Award.
He holds a BA in Psychology and Philosophy from Winthrop University and an MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology and Human Resource Management from Appalachian State University. He completed his Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior and Development from the George Washington University, where his research focused on group dynamics, organizational culture and leadership.
