Program emphasizes the integration of digital, social and traditional media platforms
Charlotte, N.C. (April 17, 2013) – To help working adults gain vital communication skills for the 21st century, Queens University of Charlotte now offers an online Master of Arts in Communication through its Knight School of Communication. The integrative, competitively priced program is offered completely online for the convenience of working adults who wish to “lead the conversation” by becoming fluent in new and traditional media platforms. Applications are now being accepted and classes begin in Fall 2013.
The online MA in Communication is designed to help students succeed in an increasingly connected, interactive and visual world. The curriculum emphasizes the effective use of existing and emerging platforms, including digital and social media within various contexts and for different audiences. Students will learn to identify the needs, preferences and motivations of different communities and markets; tailor messaging to various media formats; build their understanding of communication dynamics; and craft meaningful content, including brands and visuals.
Thanks to the generous support of the Knight Foundation, the Knight School of Communication is able to offer initiatives to promote digital and media literacy among students and the community, making it a leader in the study and development of this exciting field. Students in the MA in Communication will benefit from the School’s knowledge of the latest practices, research and theory in existing and emerging forms of media, which they can put to work right away. “Our students find the combination of theory and practice one of the most beneficial aspects of the program,” said Zachary White, Director of Graduate Programs at the Knight School. “They instantly grasp the applications of what they learn both in their personal and professional lives.”
Career applications for this degree are plentiful. According to the most recent edition of the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Occupational Outlook Handbook, managerial jobs in strategic communications—such as those in advertising, promotions and marketing—are expected to increase by 14 percent from 2010 to 2020, due in large part to increasing competition and the need to maintain market share. Employment of public relations specialists, who perform the crucial task of maintaining organizations’ public images, is expected to grow 23 percent over the same period, faster than the average for all occupations.
In addition, in many surveys, such as the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ Job Outlook 2013, employers report putting communication skills at the top of the list of abilities they seek in potential employees. Students may also gain the confidence to take an entrepreneurial approach to their careers, working as consultants or launching their own businesses, as several Master’s in Communication graduates have done.
Fostering fluency in digital and traditional media and ethical and clear communication is part of the Knight School’s mission to prepare students to become aware and engaged citizens, advocates and leaders in their communities and our society.
